Prominent Ear Correction (Otoplasty)

Overview

Suture based Otoplasty is the safest method to correct prominent ears. The procedure can provide significant psychological wellbeing to both adults and children. The operation is usually very successful, with 90-95% of patients happy with the outcome.

What is the Surgical technique?

An incision is made in the back of the ear and three sets of sutures are used to pin back the ear into a more desirable position. The scar is concealed in the back of the ear and is barely noticeable. In adults the procedure can be done under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic, in children the same depending on the patients wishes.

What is the Post Operative care?

A head bandage is worn for the first week to provide comfort and to minimise post operative bleeding. The wound is checked in the first week in dressing clinic, the patients are advised to wear a supportive head bandage for the next 4-6 weeks.

What are the complications?

Bleeding - may need to return to theatre to evacuate blood clot

Infection - rare and may necessitate admission for Intravenous Abx

Poor scar - Hypertrophic or Keloid scar

Asymmetry

Overcorrection or under correction

Recurrence 5-10% in literature - may need further surgery for correction
